Marathon County

Ah, the great outdoors! Marathon County is a destination with outdoor recreation in mind. Smell the fresh air, feel the wind in your hair. This is your chance to relax, explore, and spend some time with family and friends away from the daily grind. Located in the middle of north central Wisconsin, the Wausau area includes the communities of Wausau, Rib Mountain, Schofield, Rothschild, Mosinee and Weston. Surrounded by woods, lakes and hills, the Wausau area enjoys the fortunate combination of big-city amenities with the look and feel of the great Northwoods and small-town hospitality.

Four distinct seasons of recreation are enjoyed in the area. Rib Mountain has the highest skiable downhill run in the state, 73 kilometers of groomed cross-country ski trails, 750 miles of groomed snowmobile trails, sheets of indoor ice for hockey, curling and figure skating, plus snowshoeing or sledding. Summer offers golfing, hiking and biking on the trails of beautiful parks, fishing, swimming, sailing, boating or canoeing on the rivers or lakes. Fall is also a wonderful time to enjoy the natural beauty of Central Wisconsin as the forests become painted with autumn’s rich reds, golds, and ambers.
