Spooner

Welcome to Spooner

Spooner, located at the intersection of Hwy 63/US Hwy 53 just 6 miles north of Shell Lake, hosts the Fat Tire Stampede, an off-road bike race held during the Spooner Rodeo weekend in July. Spooner is the third-largest community between Eau Claire and Superior on the four-lane U.S. Hwy. 53 in Washburn County and is famous for its fishing. Area lakes can produce big walleyes and musky on their own, but when Mother Nature needs an occasional boost, the Governor Tommy G. Thompson State Fish Hatchery in Spooner is up to the task. The hatchery first opened in 1914, and was completely renovated in 1996 when the 4,568-square-foot building was replaced by a state-of-the-art 14,000-square-foot building that houses an incubation area, offices, conference room, laboratory, outdoor fish exhibit, and visitor center.
