Neillsville, Wisconsin

In the Heart of Central Wisconsin

Neillsville, WisconsinNeillsville is a unique community nestled in the rolling hills of central Wisconsin surrounded by natural beauty, with strong historical and cultural roots. The O'Neill Creek flows through the center of the town and drains into the rocky Black River. Neillsville has an historic Downtown with twenty-one buildings listed on the State and National Historic registers. Activities include the Neillsville Heritage Days, The Clark County Fair and the Winter Carnival. The Neillsville area offers several motels, number of fine eating establishments, an 18-hole golf course, tennis court, and airport. Amish farms and crafts dot the countryside.

Chatty BellePerhaps the town's most recognizable figure is Chatty Belle, The World's Largest Talking Cow. For just a quarter, she'll be obliged to tell you everything she knows about the dairy industry in Wisconsin, and the Neillsville area. She stands proudly just outside of the 1964 World's Fair Pavilion that was transplanted here in 1967. It is also the home of Central Wisconsin Broadcasting Incorporated (WCCN 1370 AM, 107.5 FM, 92.7 FM), and Pavilion Cheese and Gifts.

The Silver Dome Ballroom is located 5 miles west of Neillsville on Highway 10. It was engineered and built during the Great Depression and opened in 1933. On January 17, 1997, the Silver Dome was listed in the National Registries of Historical Places. The Silver Dome is one of a kind in existence and unique in the fact that this ballroom from the original dance area is still in operation. The floating maple hardwood floor and the beautiful arching lamella truss design provides a perfect atmosphere. It is one of the truly romantic and nostalgic places left in existence, and available for social gatherings.

Neillsville's first jail was built in 1881 and its second in 1886. In 1897 a third was built and more substantional jail was built and housed beautiful living quarters for the sheriff and his family. The total construction cost was $15,000 and over 209 cords of brick were used. The La Crosse architecture firm of Stozle & Schick were the designers. The castle-like structure, with it's turrets, juts up three stories and is one of the most unique in the state with it's fortress-like architechture. This formidable Clark County jail was placed on the National & State Historic Register in 1978 and is operated by the Clark County Historical Society.
