Swiss Cheese Capital of the U.S.A.

The City of Monroe is located in the lush rolling countryside of southwestern Wisconsin. The word "cheese" is synonymous with Monroe because in the 1840s the Swiss settled in this area and made Swiss cheese. They took cheesemaking from a kitchen art to a thriving business. Area cheese plants take great pride in producing European cheeses. Hence, Monroe is known as the Swiss Cheese Capital of the U.S.A., and has a mystique all its own. As it continues to prosper and grow, the city will always extend the hand of friendship to visitors and give them a warm feeling of "Willkommen."

Cheese Days celebrations started in 1914 and are held during even-numbered years. The weekend festival features music, dance, parades, factory tours and cheesemaking demonstrations. Although Monroe has grown to nearly 11,000 people, the community has never lost touch with it's rich, rural heritage, the productive land and the importance of good fellowship. Everybody loves Baumgartners Country Style Deli Bar & Restaurant on the Square in Monroe - a true Wisconsin original that features area cheeses, sandwiches, Berghoff and Huber Beers, Blumer's Sodas and lots of good people who know most everything about Monroe.

Step off the beaten path into the great outdoors of Green County. As a base camp for outdoor recreation, Monroe's diversity of accommodations, amenities, and services exceed the expectations of those who are most at home in the outdoors. Monroe is a convenient gateway to the outdoors, and a perfect place to get supplies before heading out into the woods. Making up a part of what is known as the "driftless region", Monroe and its surrounding countryside provides a dramatic natural landscape to enjoy nature and the abundant wildlife that make their home here. Three state parks and thousands of acres of public hunting and fishing grounds provide extensive wildlife habitat. With only the amount of daylight to limit your recreational pursuits, there will always be some new trail, path or stream left to be enjoyed.

The original Joseph Huber Brewery building, established in 1845, was destroyed by fire in 1875. The plant was rebuilt and continued to produce beer until prohibition years. In 1933 beer production was resumed and has continued to the present. Over the years we've built an international reputation for our championship cheeses and award-winning beer. Come and visit us! We'll have a warm welcome, a delicious cheese sandwich, and some world class beer waiting for you when you roll into town!
