Monroe, Wisconsin

Swiss Cheese Capital of the U.S.A.

Monroe, WisconsinThe City of Monroe is located in the lush rolling countryside of southwestern Wisconsin. The word "cheese" is synonymous with Monroe because in the 1840s the Swiss settled in this area and made Swiss cheese. They took cheesemaking from a kitchen art to a thriving business. Area cheese plants take great pride in producing European cheeses. Hence, Monroe is known as the Swiss Cheese Capital of the U.S.A., and has a mystique all its own. As it continues to prosper and grow, the city will always extend the hand of friendship to visitors and give them a warm feeling of "Willkommen."

Wheels of Swiss Cheese - Monroe, WisconsinCheese Days celebrations started in 1914 and are held during even-numbered years. The weekend festival features music, dance, parades, factory tours and cheesemaking demonstrations. Although Monroe has grown to nearly 11,000 people, the community has never lost touch with it's rich, rural heritage, the productive land and the importance of good fellowship. Everybody loves Baumgartners Country Style Deli Bar & Restaurant on the Square in Monroe - a true Wisconsin original that features area cheeses, sandwiches, Berghoff and Huber Beers, Blumer's Sodas and lots of good people who know most everything about Monroe.
