Rowley’s Bay was once a prosperous logging area with a sawmill, post office and a small hotel on the bay shore. A popular resort restaurant and a campground still host visitors to this area where a French missionary first walked ashore in 1686. The cross on the shoreline is a replica of one built by Jesuit missionaries in the late 1600’s. The bay bears the name of Peter Rowley, who in 1835 left the imaginary congestion of the little frontier post at Fort Howard and settled at this point.
