Don't Miss These City Spots Sponsored by WisTravel
The Hurley area features more than 50 waterfalls of varying heights. Two are tied for the greatest descent. Superior Falls on the Montreal River near it’s mouth at Lake Superior and Potato River Falls on the western side of the county each feature cascades greater than a 10 story building. To get to our waterfalls is very easy in some cases, with parks for a picnic or camping adjacent. Yet other falls require a little hiking and ingenuity to fully experience. Saxon Falls, also on the Montreal River, drops 78 feet. It is the starting point in the spring time for three miles of a wild white water ride through the Montreal River Canyon for only the most experienced kayak enthusiast.
The best down hill skiing and snow boarding in the Midwest is right here. With our unique micro climate, you will find deep piles of snow, even when others have none. Hurley is a fantastic headquarters for Alpine skiers. You will find a wide variety of great restaurants, from authentic Italian cuisine to great grilled steaks to savory burgers at local pubs that just can’t be matched by the chain outfits. And you can’t beat Hurley’s night life when it comes to having a good time in the north woods.
One of the best spots for history buffs is the Iron County Historical Society Museum. The museum’s tower strikes the most prominent silhouette on Hurley’s skyline and during warm months, the clock continues to chime each hour as it has for more than 110 years. Today it is open for your discovery. The museum offers you three enormous floors filled with exhibits reflecting the history of iron mining, lumbering, domestic life and the veterans from the north woods. The museum is included in the National Register of Historical Buildings, and it serves as the keystone in Iron County’s designation as a Wisconsin Heritage Area. There is also a gallery of photographs taken by the pioneering Emma A. Sackett and a research center to browse more than a century of local newspapers on microfilm.
