North of the Tension Wires

Just a few miles off the tip of the Door County peninsula lies Washington Island. A friendly year-round home to 700 people, the island is also an enchanting destination for thousands of visitors each year. The Washington Island Ferry Line is the vital transportation link across storied Death's Door passage. Reaching the north end of Highway 42, a new world appears as travelers are greeted by the Northport ferry pier and a magnificent view of adventures ahead. As the ferry landing nears, an enjoyable visit to the 35-square-mile historic community awaits.

Washington Island is a great place to enjoy beautifully clear starry nights and fun-filled days in the sun. But it’s much more than that. Located in an old schoolhouse, the Art & Nature Center features the work of local artists. The nature room has many displays such as an observation beehive, geologic history of the island, weather phenomena, and information about fish, birds and wildlife of the area. The Jackson Harbor Maritime Museum is located in two former fishing sheds at Jackson Harbor where fisherman continue in the commercial fishing trade. View artifacts, photographs and videos on local maritime history including commercial fishing, Coast Guard and area shipwrecks.

The Stavkirke ("Church of Staves") is modeled on an original Scandinavian design, and was hand-built by "islanders". Services are often held there throughout the year, and it is a popular site for weddings. The Trueblood Performing Arts Center was opened in 2004. With 252 seats and a large stage, it is dedicated to providing the Washington Island community with quality experiences in all areas of the arts.

Yes, there are working lighthouses in the area. Pilot Island Lighthouse can be seen from the ferry as well as the Plum Island Range light system. The restored lighthouse on Rock Island is a wonderful place to visit and you actually get to see the inside of it and hear about its history from the people who staff it regularly. Come share the beauty and serenity of Washington Island, Door County. Washington Island is one of the best kept secrets in the Midwest with its spectacular views, fishing and just plain family fun.
