Somerset, Wisconsin

Apple River Country

Somerset, WisconsinFounded in 1856 by General Samuel Harriman, the Village of Somerset has a long, rich history that is reflected in Somerset's small town character and ethnic heritage. The village site chosen by Harriman was in close proximity to the Apple River, which made an ideal location for a lumber mill. The pioneers of Somerset were French-speaking immigrants arriving from the Canadian province of Quebec, who had migrated to the area in search of farmlands.

Wildwood TrailThe Wildwood Trail is a seven-mile off-road hiking, biking and snowmobiling trail on a former railroad right-of-way, which runs from the Village of Woodville south to the St. Croix/Pierce County line, through the Town of Eau Galle. St. Croix County’s rolling hillsides provide an excellent terrain for bicycle riding. The County’s unusual vistas from lakes to rivers to farmland and pastureland provide scenic variety. Town and county roads provide interesting alternatives for bicyclists locally and for those staying at the city, county, state or federal camping facilities in and near the county.

Flo-Rite AmpitheatreThe Float-Rite Amphitheatre on the Apple River in Somerset is just about as good as it gets for a mid-summer concert, featuring national artists. It boasts reserved chairs going from the stage all the way back to the grassy slope, with food concession booths to the right of the stage. The general admission area begins at the grassy slope to the left of the stage and continues 2/3 of the way around the amphitheater.

Ice ArenaThe Somerset Youth Civic Center / Archie Montpetit Memorial Ice Arena at 529 Main Street is a focal center for many area events and tournaments. The Village of Somerset also offers several parks for the public to enjoy. Among them are Larry Forrest Memorial Park. This park contains play ground equipment, basketball courts, softball/baseball fields, a walking trail, picnic shelter/tables, and restroom facilities. Veteran's Memorial Park, located off of Hud Street, also has play ground equipment, a basketball court and tennis court. In addition this park has picnic and restroom facilities. Village Park has baseball/softball fields and picnic areas. There is a walking trail and a footbridge across the Apple River.
