Kohler

Destination Kohler

Kohler is a village in Sheboygan County, Wisconsin, along the Sheboygan River. The largest employer in Kohler is the Kohler Company, a worldwide leader in plumbing products. The village was created by the company as a planned community in 1912. Many people in Wisconsin refer to drinking fountains as “bubblers,” because the first Kohler drinking fountain was known as “The Bubbler.” In addition to the factory, the Kohler Company also owns The American Club golf resort, which includes the Blackwolf Run course complex in Kohler and the Whistling Straits complex in nearby Haven.

Explore Kohler

Whistling Straits, which opened in 1998, offers two courses of dynamic contrast. Open, rugged and windswept terrain defines the Straits Course sculpted along two miles of Lake Michigan shoreline. Just inland, interspersed by four meandering streams, the grassland-and-dunes aspect of the Irish Course is a deceivingly tranquil landscape. In 1999, its first year of eligibility, the Straits Course was ranked 67th on Golf Magazine’s prestigious list of the “Top 100 Courses in the World”. The same magazine placed Straits 35th among the “Top 100 Courses in the U.S.” (Sept. 1999).

Nearby Kohler-Andrae State Park is the home of majestic sand dunes, miles of golden beach, shimmering blue Lake Michigan water, whispering pines, an abundance of wildlife, and recreational activities for everyone. The park is one of the last natural preserves along the Lake Michigan shore, and is open for everyone to explore and enjoy. There’s a 105-unit campground, including 49 sites with electrical hookups. Off-site parking for additional vehicles is available. In addition, a canvas and pole tepee is for rent in the summer for those who do not have their own camping equipment or who want the experience of camping in a primitive shelter.

A favorite attraction for art lovers, the John Michael Kohler Art Center is home to more than eight specialty galleries including the learning gallery for children, the arts/industry gallery, the community gallery and others. The JMKAC is also proud to feature a variety of performing arts in their very own Playhouse and Performing Arts Studio. The exterior grounds feature the Café Terrace, Festival Green and the Sculpture Garden. The diversity of the JMKAC creates a new home for education and beauty full of creative energies for both visual and performing arts.
