the little town on the bay..

Ellison Bay was founded in 1866 by Johan Berndt Eliason, who came to America from Denmark. Close by is a breathtaking view of the Bay from the crest of Ellison Bluff in 174-acre Ellison Bluff Park. This 174-acre park offers one of the most breathtaking views in the county. A wooden walkway/observation deck leads safely to the edge of sheer, 100-foot limestone bluffs. For the more adventurous, an enclosed catwalk extends out over the bluff. Shady picnic area and cool breezes off the water add to the charm.

Nearby Newport State Park, a semi-wilderness area, has within its boundaries secluded hiking and cross-country ski trails. Located at the tip of the Door County Peninsula, this 2,370-acre wilderness area offers 11 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline as a quiet alternative to bustling Door County, which attracts tourists in droves each summer. The park has more than 30 miles of low-stress trails in various interconnecting loops. There's camping at designated sites, an inland lake, and lots of beaches, coves, and headlands to explore. Newport State Park is the closest hikers will come to a true Northwoods wilderness experience this close to a major Wisconsin city.

During Olde Ellison Bay Days, the town fills with an arts & crafts fair, music and entertainment, a grand parade & raffle, Classic and antique car shows, soap box derby, food and beverage booths, kid’s games and more. A Grand raffle drawing is held on Sunday. Olde Ellison Bay Days are held on the last weekend of June every summer in Ellison Bay. Sponsored by the Ellison Bay Men’s Club, just for the fun of it!

Visitors to Ellison Bay will find numerous potters and other artisans plying their trade. According to the readers of Midwest Living magazine Door County is the best place to find a unique gift in the Midwest. Escape the mall experience of franchise shops. Door County is home to an extraordinarily diverse retail community. Antiques, art, home décor, apparel, lighthouse treasures and gifts galore grace the communities of the Peninsula. It is nirvana for any shopaholic. And while you’re finding the perfect gifts and souvenirs don’t miss the many specialty food shops and farm stands. It’s always a good idea to bring home a taste of Door County.
