Bayfield

Adventure Abounds

Adventure on the land abounds in Bayfield. Visitors looking for land based recreation can enjoy hiking and bicycling trails, golf at Apostle Highlands or across the water at Madeline Island Golf Club, berry picking at a multitude of orchards a mile out of town, or horseback riding. Two museums, the Bayfield Heritage Museum and the Maritime Museum, offer a glimpse into Bayfield’s past and the Isle Vista Casino north of Bayfield offers gaming and live entertainment. Bayfield is also home to some glorious orchards and berry farms. Bayfield is located on Lake Superior, the largest pristine body of water in the world.

Explore Bayfield

For entertainment with a historic bent, take a Bayfield Heritage Walking Tour or the thrilling Ghost Tour and learn of Bayfield’s haunted past and present. And be sure to stop in at the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore headquarters (this 1883 courthouse is on the National Register of Historic Places) where park staff is available to help plan trips to the national lakeshore and books, postcards, maps, videos, and other Apostle Islands-themed merchandise is available for sale. Shopping and a tour of local galleries rounds out the many choices available to those wishing to keep both feet on the land!

For those who want to experience the water, Bayfield and Lake Superior offer the 22 Apostle Islands in a National Park setting that preserves the natural resources and history of the area. You can see the Apostle Islands up close by taking the Grand Cruise that leaves from the City Dock. Several of the islands have lighthouses. No trip to Bayfield can be called complete without a trip to the Lake Superior Big Top Chautauqua. Most every night during the summer season, Big Top offers top rated international, regional, and local performers in a variety of shows.

If you bring your own boat or want to charter a boat, there are marinas and marina services in the area to provide accommodations and supplies, as well as mechanical work should she need repair. And if you want to experience or learn more about boating on Lake Superior there are charter services that provide boats and instruction. And bringing in a large lake trout or salmon can be a lot easier with one of the sport fishing charters in the area. Or hop the ferry and rent a bike to take in the island or walk through downtown to enjoy shopping, resturaunts, museum and a golf course. Take your car for a trip to Big Bay State Park, a scuba diving trip to one of the many older ship wrecks located in the Apostles, or a take brisk swim in Lake Superior from one of the many fine sand beaches.
