Explore Port Washington
Port Washington is a town that you can walk. There are several self-guided walking tours available. These walks can take you past and into many historic buildings, or along the harbor past our two lighthouses. Pick up a map at the Visitor Center, itself a historic building known as the “Pebble House”. Spend the night, so you are able to see and experience all that we have to offer! Choose from several forms of accommodations: modern, comfortable hotels, our charming bed & breakfasts, or a hidden gem of a mom & pop motel. Many of the rooms have beautiful lake views, and a hospitable welcome awaits you at all of them. You will find history and breathtaking views everywhere you turn.
You can play in Port Washington, too! Our charter fishing fleet is one of the largest on the Great Lakes, with fishing successes documented by Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources records. Try your own luck with a fishing pole, or play golf overlooking the lake at a course just north of town. If swimming is your preferred summer activity, we have a natural beach just north of the marina, or a highly acclaimed waterpark just west of downtown. There is much to do and see if you are interested in inland activities as well. Port is just minutes away from state parks, nature centers with hiking or skiing trails, horseback riding trails, or even a living history village. A county-wide paved bike trail, The Interurban, goes through Port Washington, and a place to rent bicycles is right off the trail. Visit the last covered bridge in the state, or see where Flag Day was born.
You are invited to enjoy festivals and special events each year, many of which are, not surprisingly, celebrating the city’s maritime heritage. On Saturdays during the summer, a Farmers Market provides delightful diversions; and many Sunday evenings you can enjoy free concerts in the City Bandshell. Port Washington’s beautiful setting on the Lake Michigan shore, small-town pleasures, and rich history are to be enjoyed every day of the year. Whether you are here for one of our festivals or events or for a getaway with your own itinerary, we are sure you will find yourself returning again and again.
