Phelps is located in famous Vilas County 15 miles northeast of Eagle River, Wisconsin. The area of Phelps township is slightly larger than that of Milwaukee, and smaller than Chicago, 92.4 square miles with a diverse population of 1327. Nearly 75% of the land in Phelps township is Nicolet National Forest lands. These 37,716 acres translate to 30 acres for each man, woman and child in Phelps. We invite you to share these beautiful wooded lands and lakes. The headwaters of the mighty Wisconsin River as well as the Deerskin River start right here in Phelps, and other waters flow to Lake Michigan. Just two miles north, in the Ottawa National Forest in Upper Michigan, waters flow to Lake Superior. Our high elevation means clean water, clear air and an abundance of winter snow.

Explore Phelps

The closest bike trails are in the Eagle River, Phelps, Land O’Lakes, Sayner, Star Lake and St. Germain Areas. Hike or cross-country ski the Phelps Cross-Country Skiing and Hiking Trail through a forest of maple, birch, and basswood. It is an easy grade with only one downhill section that requires some caution when skiing. Established for traditional-style skiing only, it is maintained in partnership with the Phelps Chamber of Commerce. Nature lovers will be drawn to the solitude of this trail ideally located “off the beaten path”.

Note the size of our lakes: North Twin (4.5 miles long), Lac Vieux desert, Big Kentuck as well as many smaller lakes offer excellent fishing for the expert and the novice. The months of May, June, September, October as well as the winter ice season produce the best fishing but expect to have good fishing during the summer season as well. Big Sand Lake covers 1,408 acres and is located in northeastern Vilas County, east of Phelps, Wis. It has a sand and gravel bottom and is very productive for large musky. Vilas county has one of the world’s highest concentrations of inland freshwater lakes, including over 1300 lakes and 73 rivers and streams. Bald Eagles and Eagle nests can be found all over Vilas County. Whether it’s golfing, horseback riding, fishing, boating, sun bathing, cross country skiing, snowmobiling, downhill skiing, go-cart racing, swimming, searching for antiques or just window shopping, there is sure to be an activity that will be of interest to you!

Visitors will find this to be a beautiful secluded place to relax and unwind.
