Black River Country
Black River Country is a great place for vacationing and holds something in store for everyone, located just two hours from the Mississippi Bridge in the Twin Cities, two hours from Madison, WI and five hours from Chicago. Take a scenic drive in our beautiful hills and valleys. Spend the weekend camping, fishing, skiing, canoeing, kayaking, 4-wheeling and much more!
The City of Black River Falls is a historic and friendly community in the heat of west central Wisconsin and is the County Seat for Jackson County, designated in 1853. The City is centrally located in Jackson County with the villages of Melrose, Taylor, Hixton, Alma Center and Merrillan within a 15 mile radius. A good network of County Trunk Roads and State Highways link the villages to each other and to the city. Our area offers a unique experience of varied terrain. The rolling landscape is quite steep in places which is characteristic of the Coulee country of western Jackson County and certainly adds to the challenge. In eastern Jackson County the trails meander through heavily wooded areas and a gentler, more level grade.
With approximately 200,000 acres of public lands and a bountiful supply of deer, it is not surprising that Jackson County is known as the "Deer Capital of Wisconsin." The Jackson County Forest and Black River State Forest provide a perfect habitat for deer, ruffed grouse, squirrel and wild turkey. Dike 17 and the Black River bottoms provide excellent waterfowl hunting for ducks and geese.
The Black River Falls area is the home of over 300 miles of snowmobile trails and over 100 miles of ATV trails. Many ski trails, hiking trails and much more are also the home of Black River Falls. Jackson County and the Black River State Forest offers many opportunities for hikers and also cross-country skiers. There are over many miles of excellent quality recreational trails across Jackson County for your enjoyment. For the nature lover, breathtaking scenery and wildlife are abundant everywhere in Jackson County.
