With your harvest baskets in hand, head out to some of the fun destinations around the state. 40th Annual Oktoberfest Race Weekend |

October 8th thru 11th, 2009 West Salem
It has become the most popular short track asphalt racing event in the Midwest - 16 divisions over four days. The American Speed Association Midwest Tour, the ASA Late Model North Series, the Big-8 Late Models, Mid-American Stock Car Series and USST Super Trucks will each decide their 2009 champions at Fest, along with the best weekly competitors in Area Sportsmen, La Crosse Late Models, La Crosse Sportsmen, Super Sportsmen, Modifieds, R.A.Y.S., Thunderstox, Enduro, Vintage, Hornets, and Bandits. Stars & cars of the NASCAR Re/Max Challenge Series. Food & refreshments. Free camping. La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway.

12th Whistlestop Marathon/Half Marathon & Festival |

October 9th & 10th, 2009 Ashland
A weekend of music and running. Join in and run a beautiful marathon course that begins in Iron River, Wisconsin and finishes in Ashland, Wisconsin on Lake Superior's south shore. This fall marathon offers you spectacular fall colors, friendly aid stations and the best in pre-and post-race blues music. It's easy to see why the WhistleStop is the Upper Midwest's fall classic. Lake Superior fish boil and pasta feed on Friday followed by the marathon, half-marathon, 5K, 10K and Toddler's Race, plus the Blues and Brew Fest on Saturday. 805 Lakeshore Drive.

Described as "America's preeminent country weirdos," the Lizards return to the MAC stage with their one-of-a-kind cutting edge of political and social comment. Trademarks of a Lizards song are highly literate, sharply pointed lyrics that poke fun at politics, love, religion and the culture in general. Two new "weirdos," Darcie Deaville and Julieann Banks, join original Lizards Hank Card, Conrad Deisler, and Tom Pittman - who have been writing and performing songs for 29 years - as the newest members of the Lizards. And now for something completely different! A Canine Festival in the park...a Howling good time for humans and their hounds. Barktoberfest is a free & fun canine festival & party for you and your dog(s). Dog sport demonstrations including flyball, 4-H obedience and canine freestyle plus costume and trick contests, yappy hour (at Mill On Main patio, just a block away, with both you and your dog(s) from 3-5PM), demos, vendors, rescue groups, food and more. Noon - 4PM, rain date October 18. Village Square - Veterans Park, 9AM to 4PM.

A celebration of Fall in "The Waterpark Capital of the World!" Events featured include: arts & crafts marketplace, farmers' market, straw dig, scarecrow stuffing, pumpkin decorating, kid's craft corner, petting zoo, hayrides, pony rides, caricatures and face painting. Celebrate autumn and all of its glorious colors! Festival includes Wisconsin Dells On Tap, featuring more than 25 Breweries from around Wisconsin (Saturday, October 17 from Noon - 5PM). Just in time for Halloween we are visited by the scholarly Ichabod Crane, the brawny Brom Bones, the lovely Katrina Van Tassel, the residents of Tarry Town and the Headless Horseman, as they create the story made famous by the legend. This autumnal classic is faithful to the original story written by Washington Irving in 1819 and will thrill and chill without being too scary. No fall is complete without The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Bring the family for a thrilling afternoon with the characters of Tarry Town! UW-Whitewater's Young Auditorium, 930 W Main Street.
