Olbrich Botanical Garden: Kwanzaa Celebration

Olbrich hosts Madison's annual community Kwanzaa celebration. Kwanzaa is a seven-day celebration of the African American spirit and culture. This non-religious celebration will feature music, poetry, singing and dancing. The event is free and open to all members of the community. Admission is free, but limited seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Olbrich Botanical Gardens & Bolz Conservatory, 3330 Atwood Avenue. Event starts at 1:00PM and ends at 3:00PM.

Bi-State Wrestling Tournament

This is one of the most competitive wrestling destinations in the Midwest, welcoming more than fifty schools to compete in this year's Holiday tournament. Doors open to public at 9AM, two sessions per day both days. Monday: Preliminaries, Wrestle-backs & Quarter-finals (bouts 89-108). Tuesday: Wrestle-backs & Semi-finals (bouts 109-124), 3rd, 9th & 11th Placement Matches (bouts 125-127), Parade of Champions (6:30PM) and 1st, 5th & 7th Placement Matches (bouts 128-130) at 6:45PM. 2008 World Champion Liar - Burlington Liars Club

The Burlington Liars Club is looking for a few more fantastic fibs as its gets ready to name the 2008 World Champion Liar in its 78th annual contest. "Remember, this is a contest for amateurs,” club president Joel Weis said. "Politicians and attorneys are not eligible." Weis said a good lie is almost believable and does not offend. Liars of any age are welcome to enter. The club often gets fabrications created by elementary school students. The 2nd Annual New Year's Eve Cheese Drop

Only in Plymouth; where cheese is famous, an 80-pound decorated cheese wedge amazingly will descend from a 100ft. ladder truck, operated by Fire Chief Nicolaus. The "Big Cheese" will drop exactly at midnight! The public is invited to watch - admission to the Cheese Drop is free, and complimentary refreshments will be served. Plymouth Fire Department will drop the Big Cheese in the Creamery Building Parking Lot, 520 East Mill Street (right next door to the Arts Center). 8PM - 1AM.

Droppin' of the Carp in Prairie du Chien

The first annual Droppin' of the Carp was held in 2002 after Tom Nelson and his wife, Cathie, watched locals in Savannah, Ga. lower a giant styrofoam peach. "We decided we could have some sort of New Year's celebration here in the Midwest," Nelson said. "Being on the river, it had to be a fish." They organize it every year and expect to draw as many as 2,000 - people, that is. All the ceremonial carp are named Lucky because eating carp on New Year's brings good luck. 9PM -door prizes, bonfires lit, hot chocolate, popcorn, a Carp drop King and Queen, and a football game. Ice Racing on Chequamegon Bay

Ice Racing

January 1st thru March 15th, 2009 Ashland
Ice races on Lake Superior's Chequamegon Bay. Beginning in January, Car Ice Racing will take place every Sunday at 12PM until 3PM (ice conditions permitting), on Lake Superior and Chequamegon Bay ice near Maslowski Beach in Ashland. This annual event in Ashland is fun to watch and even more fun to be in! Cars race around a groomed track right on the ice off the shoreline. The races usually run from mid-January to mid-March, depending on the ice conditions.Although Lake Superior seldom freezes over, Mother Nature provides ample ice on Chequamegon Bay.
