Old World Wisconsin Special Events
On July 22-23 Old World Wisconsin, just 35 miles from Milwaukee, turns back the clock to the late 19th and early 20th centuries for "Animals and Machines: A Power Exposition." The event reveals firsthand how horses, oxen - even sheep - helped to power everything from butter churns to threshing machines on Wisconsin farms.
Other Old World Wisconsin events to mark on your calendar include "Laura Ingalls Wilder Day"on August 4, an event that gives kids the chance to enjoy a day in the lives of the Ingalls family in the historic setting of Old World's 19th-century farmsteads and village buildings, and "Pickles, Preserves and Produce" on August 19. This all-new event explores how 19th-century pioneers kept their food fresh and edible year round before the advent of refrigerators, freezers or modern-day grocery stores.
Stonefield in Cassville
In the hills and valleys of beautiful southwestern Wisconsin, Stonefield in Cassville will celebrate the history of railroading during "Railroad Days" on August 19. So it's all aboard for a trip back in time to an era when trains provided the main means of transportation for both people and goods. The day will feature activities and displays related to railroading. Visit the Stonefield Depot, hop up into the Stonefield caboose, view model railroading trains, and stop by the "End of the Line" hobo camp.
Stonefield comprises a re-created 1900-vintage rural farming village and the State Agricultural Museum, which traces the history of Wisconsin agriculture from its inception to the 20th century. Stonefield, named after the estate farmed by Wisconsin's first governor Nelson Dewey, also includes Dewey's home site.
Wade House
On the opposite end of the state, midway between Fond du Lac and Sheboygan, Wade House offers one of the most colorful events in all of Wisconsin. You won't want to miss out on the fun and adventure of an authentic reenactment of "Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show" on August 26-27. This wild-and-wooly event reenacts the original Buffalo Bill Wild West Show that visited Sheboygan County more than 100 years ago. Trick riding, roping and shooting demonstrations, plus stagecoach and territorial bank hold-ups and other classic Wild West fare await all comers.
